Quiet Zones in Jupiter

On Friday, August 8, 2025, the Federal Railway Administration established a Quiet Zone designation for the six railway crossings that lie within Jupiter's town limits. This designation removes the requirement for  trains to blow their horn when approaching one of the six crossings located within Jupiter and will significantly reduce the noise associated with a training passing through our community.

What is a quiet zone?

A quiet zone is a section of a rail line where locomotive horns are not routinely sounded.  Jurisdiction of Quiet Zones fall under the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

Why do I still hear a train horn at times?

While a quiet zone designation removes the requirement for the routine blowing of train horns, it leaves the decision to blow a horn at the conductor's discretion. This is done to ensure the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and those on the train.

Be Alert When Near Train Tracks

Whether in a car, on foot, or on some other form of transportation, be alert when near train tracks. Trains will now pass through Jupiter more quietly, but just as quickly. It can take a train up to a mile to stop

Safety At Railway Crossing

Injuries and deaths occur at railway crossings every day, but by following a few safety tips, you can protect you and your family.

  • Look both ways before crossing railroad tracks, even if the gates are up and the lights are off.
  • Never stop on the tracks. If in traffic, make sure you have plenty of room to get across before entering the crossing.
  • Never drive around a gate that is lowered, or is in the process of lowering. Wait for the gates to fully rise before continuing across the tracks.
  • Never assume only one train is approaching. Trains could be approaching from opposite directions.
